Breathwork and Bathhouse

Updated: Jan 16

Sit down with Mark from A_Studio, Capybara Bathhouse's new Breathwork Facilitator, as he takes us through a session of breathwork and bathing.

MEET MARK

Mark’s journey into breathwork began the hard way—through burnout and chronic illness. As a former startup guy who could have won a gold medal in overthinking, he knows what it’s like to feel stuck in chaos mode.

Breathwork changed everything for him. Not in some mystical, mountaintop kind of way, but in a practical, “this actually works in real life” way. Now, he combines ancient wisdom with modern science to make these powerful tools accessible for everyone.

His approach? Keep it simple, make it work for modern life, and focus on real results for real people.

Sit down with Mark, Capybara Bathhouse's new Breathwork Facilitator, as he takes us through a session of breathwork and bathing.

BUT WHAT IS BREATHWORK? Breathwork is your body’s built-in tool for transformation. Through conscious breathing patterns, it taps into your nervous system’s natural ability to move between states of activation and calm. Think of it as meditation's more active cousin – accessible to everyone, but profound in its effects.

WHY BREATHWORK?

Your breath is the remote control to your nervous system. By intentionally directing it, you can:

  • Calm stress responses

  • Boost body awareness

  • Deepen relaxation

  • Access meditative states

  • Build resilience to temperature extremes

BREATHWORK MEETS BATHING

Here’s how Mark walked us through the spaces and revealed the magic of combining breathwork with bathing:

STEAM Mark started in the steam room, where the dense, aromatic mist wraps around you like a warm hug.

“Here’s the thing about the steam room,” Mark began. “Most people come in, relax, and just sit—but the key to unlocking its full potential is how you breathe.” He paused, letting the idea settle. “As the thick mist envelops you you’ll notice specific breathing patterns help your joints soften, your muscles relax, and your circulation improve.” Mark swears by his techniques for releasing tension.

SAUNA Next, Mark led us into the sauna, its dry heat contrasting with the steam room’s heavy moisture.

“The heat is challenging,” he said, grinning. “But your breath is your anchor. By focusing on your breathing, you adapt to the intense heat and actually build resilience.”

Mark demonstrated and leaned back, clearly at home in the heat. “Not only does breathing support natural detoxification, but it also makes the experience feel less like a battle with the heat. Not to mention it helps maximize the purifying benefits.”

MINERAL BATHS Then came the mineral bath—the heart of Capybara. Mark’s tone softened as he described the connection between breath and the soothing waters.

“This is where you can really let go,” he said. “The warmth of the mineral bath naturally calms your body, but when you pair it with breathing techniques that enhance your body's natural relaxation response, this is where breath becomes your anchor for deep repose.”

ICE BATH “Don’t worry,” he laughed, “the cold plunge is less about surviving and more about thriving when you harness your breath.”

Mark explained the cold shock response: that instant gasp when you hit the icy water. “Instead of letting it take over, I can guide you to calm your nervous system and help you stay present.”

It’s not just about enduring—it’s about building mental resilience. Plus, there’s a mood boost that comes from mastering the cold. You’ll step out feeling like you’ve conquered something.
